X-Men (2000) film opening

What is the function of a film opening. What does it do?

The opening of the film is used as an introduction to the history of a main protagonist and shows the emotional background to their life to give the viewer some information and knowledge of the character and their life before the events of the film. It also shows the possible traumatic events that could lead to the development of their powers/mutations, for example the long shots of the people walking shows the scale of the event and how many people it affected, which also makes the character seem more unique and special as he is the only one who clearly has different abilities. The colouring of the film is washed out which suggests that it is a different time zone, which gives the film more depth and more exciting for the viewer. Also the diegetic sound of the rain makes the opening more authentic but also create a miserable tone, which could reflect in some elements in the rest of the film and evoke emotion in the viewer. The opening of the film is also used to link to the theme of the entire film, about being different as the Holocaust punished people for being different and the opening is not typical of the genre of the film as the genre is fantasy/sci-fi and so a war themed opening is atypical as it does not seem to relate to the genre.
