Keith (2008) film opening

The film begins with a panning shot upwards along a cliff face to reveal a truck slowly moving forward. A range of close up shots of the truck follow, which gives the viewer more insight to the vehicle, which suggests that it is an important part of the story line. Also these close up shots are very effective as they are quite delicate and simple which could also suggest the nature of the scene and sets the atmosphere. It then pans out to show a girl lying in the back looking up at the sky; this uses enigma narrative as the audience does not know who she is and why she is there, all whilst the truck is still moving towards the edge of a cliff with water below. This clip is actually from towards the end of the film; however, it is placed at the beginning so the audience will want to know more about the story and the girl and wander how she got to this situation.

The purpose of this film opening is to create mystery around a girl who is later the main character to entice the viewers, it partially introduces the setting and it hints at the story line as it clearly focuses on two main things: the truck and the female protagonist. The atmosphere is also implied however, the atmosphere in the following scene is very different so again the audience is left wandering as to how the story plans out to reach this particular scene.
